“On hearing that sonata, I could no longer tell whether I was breathing music or listening to scent. For the sounds, colours and smells do not answer one another in nature only, but in ourselves they are blended at time into a profound unity, drawing different responses from different organs.”

Guy de Maupassant (read in Mandy Aftel’s Essence & Alchemy)

Troy Carter Feat. Dana El Masri - Changing - Original Mix

I have a hard time ‘endorsing’ myself. I get uncomfortable and just hope that whatever work I have created, will speak for itself.

But sometimes you gotta put yourself out there, and right now, I’d like to share a song with you, because what it represents means more to me than anything.

Troy Carter is a friend of mine. He is a House music DJ here in Montreal and we met about three years ago. We decided to collaborate on a song, there wasn’t much other than a faint beat in his mind at the time. It wasn’t the style of music I was used to singing to, but I figured why not?

Two years later, here comes Changing. A song that we recorded in one take. It’s crazy to look back and realize when and why I sang those words. I was in the midst of changing my entire outlook on the world; I had just found out about the perfumery school in Grasse and I had decided to get all my stuff together to apply. On top of that, my state of mind was all over the place, but I knew something big was coming.

I think what makes this song so special is that it talks to all of us. We all go through phases in our lives when we’ve momentarily lost our way, or where we’re absolutely driven and on a clear-cut path but have something restless within ourselves. Ironically, the one constant is change.

Either way, we all experience change in one way or another and we try to learn to accept that fact. It’s crazy to think that Troy and I had a completely different friendship back then, and look at us now!

So I’ve decided to share this song with you, most importantly because I know that Troy fought to get it out there. He did the believing for both us, never gave up and always had encouraging words for me. So thanks Troy, you did a great job!

Hope you guys enjoy it.

You can listen to and purchase the original song and its two remixes here.

Kalmunity - Montreal based artists (Video)

This is Kalmunity. A community filled with people who are passionate about spoken word poetry. They do it every Tuesday @Bombards. It’s all improv!!

I’ve seen one of their live performances and I have to say, it was the best experience of my life. I can’t believe they occupied Montreal without me knowing at the time! This is the kind of inspiration I need in my life. I love it when people speak out poetically to the world! I can see myself doing something like this one day.

Song of the day.

Bonobo - Stay the Same Ft. Andreya Triana - Black Sands

I’m going to the Bonobo concert in a couple of weeks and in preparation for the great experience that I am sure I will enjoy, I’ve been listening to this song on repeat.

Timing is interesting. The words cut right through me, making a whole lotta sense these days.
